The implementation of electric Power generation, transmission and distribution enterprises is very complex in terms of social-environmental inter-relations and physical-biotic nature. The companies of Eletrobrás System are fully aware of these inter-relations and of the compliance with environmental and social law in the country, continuously act seeking the Best social-environmental performance, from supporting in technical-scientific development up to use of communication means and business capacity.
 
Since the 80’s, concern with social-environmental impacts of the sartorial enterprises has caused Eletrobrás to coordinated efforts, jointly with companies of the sector, to assure proper treatment of such issues. The result of this work is the guideline of environmental works and policies, applied in compliance with the technical-scientific development and political and social demands of the country.
 
During this period, the environmental technical group of Eletrobrás emphasized on effective incorporation of the environmental components as Project variable and support to definitions of more complex decision making processes. In recent works, we may emphasize the studies on climate changes, the environmental feasibility and management in big transmission lines, the systematization of the environmental law specific for the energy sector and the organization of scientific contribution produced for related matters. The Environmental Department of Eletrobrás keep, among its activities, the elaboration, analysis and follow up of related projects and programs or coordinated by Eletrobrás and carries out committee’s activities of the System, coordinating the Environment Subcommittee (SCMA), subordinated to the Operation, Planning, Engineering and Environment Committee (Copem).
 
In partnerships with universities, research centers and experts, Eletrobrás fosters and participates in studies on critical issues: relocation of populations, strategic environmental planning methodologies, emissions of greenhouse gases in hydroelectric reservoirs, reduction of emissions provided from thermal generation.
 
As it may be noted, the environmental issue has been incorporated to all sartorial guideline documents in which Eletrobrás participated or coordinated. The corresponding technical reports and normative documents will be available for consultation on this page, subdivided according to their specific subject.

Since the creation of an environmental area in Eletrobrás organizational structure, as well as a sectorial forum putting together environmental representatives of companies in the middle 1980’s, various works were developed to support environmental management activities.
